General Register Office for Scotland

Edinburgh Castle One of the key functions of the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS) is taking periodic censuses of Scotland’s population and publishing results. Census results help inform decision-making and improve the quality and effectiveness of public services. GIS has been widely used in projects established to ensure that the benefits of 2001 Census investment are realised through widespread and timely provision of results.

GROS first used digital mapping to create postcode based Output Areas for 1991 Census results. Subsequent implementation of an integrated GIS enabled automated planning for the 2001 Census – saving in the region of 12 man-year’s effort for this important task.

The GIS is now also delivering the automated creation of 2001 Census Output Areas. These will feed into the Scottish Census Results On-Line Library (SCROL) which will integrate a geographic framework with Census results. For the first time this will provide e-delivery of comprehensive and Internet based facilities for the geographic presentation and analysis of Census results, free of charge. Statistical and geographic data will also be available for users to import into their own systems so as to deliver effective services to their clients and customers.
